Glazing service

Acoustic Glass

Specialist soundproof windows for homes near airports, motorways and railways

Coverage: UK-wide
Warranty: 10 years insurance-backed
Accreditation: FENSA registered

If you live under a flight path, beside a motorway, or near a busy railway line, standard glazing will not give you peace. S&K Glazing's acoustic glazing uses laminated glass with specialist PVB interlayers and asymmetric pane thicknesses to block 38-52 decibels of external noise — turning a 90 dB aircraft overhead into a quiet 38 dB hum indoors. We install across every UK airport corridor including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Stansted, Luton and Edinburgh.

Why choose our acoustic glass

  • Up to 52 dB noise reduction — equivalent to converting a jet engine to a whisper
  • Asymmetric pane thicknesses tuned to aircraft, road and rail frequencies
  • Laminated PVB interlayers also provide enhanced security and UV protection
  • Available as acoustic double or triple glazed units
  • Specified by acoustic engineers for hospitals, hotels and recording studios

Our process

From survey to installation in 4 steps

01

Noise assessment

We measure baseline external noise levels and identify dominant frequencies (low rumble from motorways vs high-frequency aircraft noise) to specify the correct glass build-up.

02

Glass specification

Typical acoustic spec: 8.8mm laminated outer + 16mm argon cavity + 6.4mm laminated inner with acoustic PVB. We adjust the build-up based on your survey.

03

Frame & seal selection

Acoustic performance depends as much on frame seals as glass. We use triple-gasket frames and acoustic-grade installation foam to eliminate sound bridges.

04

Installation & verification

Post-install we provide acoustic certification documents showing achieved Rw values, useful for mortgage lenders and noise-mitigation grant claims.

FAQs

Acoustic Glass questions, answered

Our acoustic glazing reduces external noise by 38-52 decibels. For context: standard double glazing gives 25-30 dB, our acoustic double gives 38-42 dB, and our premium acoustic triple gives 45-52 dB.
Properties under Heathrow flight paths typically need our 42 dB+ acoustic spec to bring overhead aircraft (85-90 dB) down to comfortable indoor levels (38-44 dB). Many residents qualify for Heathrow's noise insulation grant scheme.
Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Luton, Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow and several other UK airports operate noise insulation schemes for properties within their noise contours. We're the officially appointed installer for the Gatwick scheme — for the others, we provide free eligibility checks and can guide you through the application process for the relevant airport's appointed contractor.
Yes. Acoustic laminated glass typically has a similar U-value to standard double glazing, and our acoustic triple units achieve U-values of 0.8 W/m²K — meaning lower energy bills as well as silence.
Significantly. The laminated PVB interlayer means acoustic glass also acts as security glass — it holds together if smashed, resisting forced entry and protecting against accidental impact.
