Heritage Window Restoration

Specialist restoration of period timber windows — preserve the original, upgrade the performance

Coverage: UK-wide
Warranty: 10 years insurance-backed
Accreditation: FENSA registered

Some period properties have original Georgian, Victorian, or Edwardian timber windows worth restoring rather than replacing — especially in Conservation Areas, on Listed Buildings, or where the original joinery is of exceptional quality. S&K Glazing's heritage restoration service rebuilds failed sash mechanisms, scarfs-in rotten timber sections, re-cords sash weights, repaints to authentic finish, and optionally upgrades to slim-profile heritage double glazing without changing the external appearance.

Why choose our heritage window restoration

Our process

From survey to installation in 4 steps

01

Heritage condition survey

We photograph and document each window, identify the timber species and original joinery techniques, and produce a condition report listing required restoration work.

02

Consent applications

For Listed Buildings we prepare Listed Building Consent application drawings and specifications. For Conservation Area properties we liaise with conservation officers as required.

03

Workshop restoration

Sashes removed and taken to our heritage workshop. Repairs include scarfed-in timber sections, new sash cords and weights, lock servicing, and authentic micro-porous paint finish.

04

Reinstallation

Restored sashes refitted with original architraves and reveals retained. Slim-profile double glazing optionally installed at this stage.

FAQs

Heritage Window Restoration questions, answered

Restore if the original joinery is sound and architecturally significant — particularly on Listed Buildings or in Conservation Areas. Replace if frames are extensively rotten, severely damaged, or already modern replacements.
Restoration plus draught-stripping reduces air infiltration significantly. Adding slim-profile heritage double glazing achieves whole-window U-values of 1.6-2.0 W/m²K — much better than single glazing's 5.0+.
For Grade I, II*, and II Listed Buildings: yes for any changes to original windows. For Conservation Area homes: usually no consent required for like-for-like restoration but advisable to inform the council.
Per-window: 2-4 weeks in our heritage workshop. Whole-house programmes typically completed elevation-by-elevation over 3-6 months to allow occupied use.
Sash restoration without glazing upgrade: £350-£800 per window. With slim-profile heritage double glazing: £800-£1,800 per window. Listed Building specifications: £1,200-£2,800 per window.
