Living beside a busy road is genuinely tiring. Constant low-frequency rumble from heavy traffic, combined with high-frequency engine noise from acceleration and braking, creates a noise profile that standard double glazing handles poorly. Here's what actually works.
Why standard double glazing fails on traffic noise
Standard 4/16/4 mm double glazing (4mm pane, 16mm gas cavity, 4mm pane) is optimised for thermal performance — both panes are the same thickness, which means they resonate at the same frequency and transmit sound efficiently between them. For traffic noise, you need asymmetric pane thicknesses to disrupt frequency transmission.
Acoustic laminated glass — the real fix
Our standard acoustic specification uses 8.8mm laminated outer + 16mm argon cavity + 6.4mm laminated inner. The asymmetric thicknesses disrupt sound waves, and the PVB interlayer in laminated glass absorbs sound energy rather than transmitting it. The result: 38-42 dB reduction versus 25-30 dB for standard double.
Don't forget the frame and seals
Glass is only part of the story. Acoustic performance is limited by the weakest link — usually frame seals. We use triple-gasket frames, acoustic-grade installation foam (not standard expanding foam), and acoustic mastic at every junction. Skipping these turns a 42 dB-rated glass unit into a 32 dB-rated installation.
Trickle vents — the silent killer
Building regulations require background ventilation, usually delivered by trickle vents in the window head. Standard trickle vents are sound-transmitting holes. Acoustic trickle vents with internal baffles maintain ventilation while preserving up to 38 dB of the window's acoustic performance — essential on any acoustic glazing project.
Secondary glazing — the upgrade route
If you can't replace your primary windows (listed building, rental, conservation area), secondary glazing is a strong alternative. A 100mm+ air gap between primary and secondary windows acts as a powerful acoustic decoupling — our installations regularly achieve 45-50 dB total reduction when combining secondary glazing with acoustic laminated glass.
Get a noise survey
We offer free noise surveys for properties within range of major UK motorways and trunk roads. We measure baseline noise, identify dominant frequencies, and specify the right glazing build-up for your situation. Call 0800 088 6341 to arrange a survey.
