If you're replacing your windows in 2026, you'll quickly hit the big question: double glazing or triple glazing? Triple glazed windows have come down in price over the past five years, but they still cost 25-30% more than equivalent double glazed units. So is the extra outlay worth it?
The headline numbers
Double glazing typically achieves a U-value of 1.2-1.4 W/m²K. Triple glazing pushes that down to 0.6-0.9 W/m²K — roughly a 40-50% improvement in thermal performance. Whether that translates to meaningful savings depends on your house, your heating system, and how cold your local climate runs.
When triple glazing makes the most sense
Triple glazing pays back fastest in: new-build homes built to Future Homes Standard or Passivhaus targets; north-facing rooms that get little solar gain; rooms with very large glazed areas (where heat loss dominates); homes in colder regions (Scotland, the Pennines, north-east England); and properties under airport flight paths or beside motorways where acoustic performance matters as much as thermal.
When double glazing is enough
For most existing homes in central and southern England, A-rated double glazing delivers excellent performance at lower cost. If you're upgrading from single glazing or failed 1980s units, the jump to modern A-rated double glazing is enormous — going further to triple is a marginal gain at significant extra cost.
Acoustic performance — the other reason to consider triple
If you live within 5 miles of a major UK airport (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Stansted, Luton), acoustic performance is often the deciding factor. Our acoustic triple glazing reduces external noise by 42-52 dB versus 25-30 dB for standard double — turning an 85 dB aircraft overhead into a quiet 35-40 dB indoors.
Our recommendation
For most UK homes, A++ double glazing offers the best value. For new builds, Passivhaus projects, airport-corridor properties, and homes in cold regions, triple glazing is genuinely worth the extra investment.
