The lean-to conservatory — sometimes called a Mediterranean conservatory or sun room — has a single-pitch sloping roof that 'leans' against the existing house wall. It's the simplest and most cost-effective conservatory design, and the natural choice for bungalows or properties where the conservatory roof needs to fit under existing upstairs windows. Don't dismiss it on cost-grounds alone: a well-specified lean-to with full-height glazing can look architecturally stunning, particularly in contemporary minimalist styles.

Key features

  • Single sloping roof attached to the existing house wall
  • Lowest-cost conservatory style — typically 30-40% less than a Victorian of equivalent footprint
  • Roof pitch can be shallow (suits low-eaves bungalows) or steep (more roof glass area)
  • Clean rectangular footprint maximises usable floor area
  • Quickest to install — typically 5-7 days on-site

Ideal for

  • Bungalows and properties with low eaves height
  • Houses where the conservatory must sit beneath a first-floor window
  • Budget-conscious homeowners who still want a quality finish
  • Contemporary minimalist aesthetic — full-height glazing with slim aluminium frames
  • Smaller back gardens where a complex conservatory shape would dominate

Variations

  • Standard lean-to: 15-25° roof pitch, traditional appearance
  • Mediterranean / shallow-pitch lean-to: 5-10° pitch, contemporary minimalist look
  • Steep-pitch lean-to: 25-35° where wall height permits, more roof glass for light
Materials

Best material for a lean-to conservatory

uPVC is the cost-effective default. Aluminium suits contemporary lean-tos with slim sightlines and large glass panels — increasingly popular for modern homes. Hardwood is rare on lean-tos but available for heritage cottages where matching original timber detail matters.

Considerations

The roof pitch is dictated by the available wall height above where the conservatory attaches. A minimum 5° pitch is needed for water runoff; below this, you risk pooling. If your eaves height is very low (under 2.1 m), a lean-to may be the only viable conservatory style — alternatives would require lowering the floor or building up the wall first.

FAQs

Common questions about lean-to conservatories

Simpler shape, fewer frame components, fewer glass panes, faster to manufacture and install. There are no angled facets or hipped roof complications. The cost saving compared to a Victorian of equivalent floor area is typically 30-40% — sometimes more on smaller conservatories.
Not if specified properly. A lean-to with full-height glazing, slim aluminium frames, and a high-spec roof can look architecturally striking — closer to a contemporary garden room than a budget conservatory. What makes a lean-to look cheap is undersized framing, polycarbonate roofing, and skimping on the wall finish where it meets the house.
Yes — a warm-roof lean-to with insulated panels and 2-3 rooflights is one of the most popular conservatory upgrades we install. You lose some of the glass-ceiling drama but gain a room you can use year-round without overheating or chilling, and Building Regulations typically apply, which we handle for you.
